The 70th Berlin International Film Festival
From 20 February till 1 March 2020, the German capital invites all cinema fans to experience one of the most important events in the film industry. This year’s 70th Berlinale, or Berlin International Film Festival, features up to 400 films in various genres. International cinema, independent and arthouse, cinema for a young audience and new discoveries from the German film landscape, experimental forms and short films – all this is waiting for visitors of the Berlinale 2020.
President of the Berlinale
The Berlin International Film Festival is one of the A-category film festivals, and it’s worth seeing. British actor Jeremy Irons is Jury President of the Berlinale 2020. Carlo Chatrian, art-director of the Berlin International Film Festival, says: “I appreciate Jeremy Irons as a person as well as an artist and I’m proud to welcome him as jury president for the 70th edition of the Berlinale”. Juliette Binoche was president of the Berlinale last year.
Bears of the Berlinale
The Berlinale awards eight prizes, the most significant are the Golden Bear for the best film and the Silver Bears for the best actor and the best actress. Each year, a special film is selected for the opening of the Berlinale. This year, it will be a film based on the novel by Joanna Rakoff “My Salinger Year” by Canadian director Philip Falardo. This is the story of a young writer Joanna, who works for a well-known literary agent and answers fan letters to Jerome Salinger every day.
300 000 Tickets
300,000 tickets are sold annually at the Berlinale, and 21,000 professionals of the film industry come to Berlin to experience the event.
