EMERALD GREEN
Everywhere green! And this is not a cheating of your eyes tired from winter grayness. This is St. Patrick’s Day, national holiday for all Irish and other cheerful persons from different countries. Every year, on 17th March in Berlin, as everywhere in the world, people wear green cylinders, paint the shamrocks, dancing and having fun – after all, this is important celebration attributes.
PAST AND PRESENT
The story began when St. Patrick brought Christianity to Ireland, having saved the country not only from paganism, but also from the invasion of poisonous snakes. That’s why the Irish honor their kind Patrick, celebrating his day with fun, festive processions and… alcoholic drinks. Perhaps this reason has turned the Christian holiday of Ireland into a bright international event. Soon the streets of Berlin will be also filled with green color and the sound of bagpipes. There will be carnival parades, Irish dancing and, of course, dark beer!
FAIRY CREATURES
The green Shamrock became a celebration symbol, because, according to the legend, on its example St. Patrick explained to the first Irish Christians the meaning of the Holy Trinity. But with a live mascot there was a problem – it’s not usual for the Christian Saint to entertain the crowd. So it was decided to make leprechauns the mascots of St. Patrick’s Day. They are sly and nimble fairy creatures in Irish folklore. And they fit right in with the holiday atmosphere.
